New Puppy and Kitten Wellness Exam
& Informational Session
The first exam of your new pet is very exciting. We look for any birth defects, conformation problems, or abnormal growth patterns, noting especially any breed related issues. We check for external and internal parasites and discuss appropriate vaccinations, tailoring our recommendations to your particular needs. Since this is the best time to teach young pets to blend successfully into family life, we discuss feeding, house training, appropriate toys, and prevention of undesirable habits. To help your newcomer become accustomed to bathing, brushing, teeth brushing, and toenail trims, we suggest early procedures that will help to encourage acceptance of these lifelong hygiene requirements. We feel that this exam is a very important step in helping you (and us) to begin an outstanding relationship with your new family member.
Laser Surgery
Our surgical laser generates an intense beam of light that cuts through tissues with a very precise and narrow path. This shaft of light vaporizes the water that is in the skin and other soft tissues, leaving surrounding layers of cells unaffected. The heating of body fluids at the site disinfects the area of the entrance of the beam. Our patients experience less pain and bleeding with laser surgery because it seals nerve endings and cauterizes blood vessels as it cuts. Less swelling results because it does not crush, tear, or bruise tissues. The intense beam actually contracts the thin layers of cells it affects.
Laser surgery is ideal for neuters, spays, and other surgeries where licking and chewing may otherwise slow healing. It is excellent for removal of small tumors and cysts. Laser surgery has remade the cat declaw into a much less painful procedure, cutting only skin and tiny ligaments. It has greatly enhanced our ability to do the surgeries for eyelids that either turn in too much or droop open. Let us help you decide when laser surgery is right for your pet.
Geriatric Health Screenings
Our older pets have usually given up chewing corners off furniture (dogs) and curtain climbing (cats) and have become solid members of the family. With modern levels of care, we see pets up to and occasionally over twenty years old. We cherish their "golden years" as the time to share an unwavering bond of love and companionship. We would like to help you and your pet live these later years as happily as possible by investigating any known problems, behavioral changes, and doing screening tests to find health issues before they become life-threatening. A chemistry panel, complete blood count (CBC), urinalysis, and thyroid test can really help us to detect early illness and begin preventative measures. Blood pressure and glaucoma testing may allow us to begin treating before noticeable heart or kidney damage, or vision abnormalities appear. Knowing the causes of arthritis can lead us to the best possible pain management program and we check those lumps and bumps that seem to spring out of nowhere. We address both normal and abnormal senior behavioral issues such as elimination problems, decreased vision and hearing, and the possible onset of some senility. Proper feeding for this challenging life stage is also important as we balance health conditions, dental issues, weight management, and appetite Let us help you and your old friend to make the most of what can actually be the best of times.
